Abstract

Sector coupling has become a well-known term and is seen as playing a crucial role in shifting away from fossil fuels and thus as a decisive factor in the success of the energy transition. The European Green Deal and the Climate Action Plan 2050 also address the concept. However, there is still a lack of a definitive, generally accepted definition of sector coupling. This also means that the discourse has not yet considered the purposes, goals, and principles of sector coupling. This chapter examines the issue at an abstract level. To this end, the concept of sector coupling was analyzed and criteria for “good” sector coupling were established. Criteria are the purpose, objectives, and principles of “good” sector coupling. To those belong in particular the contribution to existing national and international commitments and additionality of the energy used. Based on the purpose, objectives, and principles of “good” sector coupling, this chapter offers a valid instrument for assessment and review by legislators, stakeholders, and the public of sector coupling measures and regulation.
