In Move Urban, IKEM is exploring the legal framework for land-saving, integrated mobility services and possible operator models. The implementation of such concepts will be examined alongside the emergence of a new urban neighborhood (Waterkant), which will be developed by the state-owned housing companies Gewobag and WBM.

The project seeks answers to the challenges of growing cities: The rapidly expanding population not only requires the construction of new housing. Traffic demand is also growing, but the available space on the streets for driving and parking can hardly be expanded. Overcrowded streets in residential neighborhoods, obstructions for deliveries, garbage trucks, buses and emergency services require new concepts for urban passenger and commercial traffic. The use of electric vehicles will make an important contribution to improving the quality of the residential environment through lower noise and emissions. The implementation of good connections to public transport, for example through cycling and with sharing vehicles, is also part of such concepts.

In order for such concepts to be implemented, the many ideas concerning planning, technology and organization will be brought together for the first time in the Waterkant district. In the process, legal and institutional questions and interrelationships between corresponding actors will also be clarified for the first time. IKEM’s research questions cover the legal areas of road and traffic law, electromobility, and car sharing.
