Legal framework for ERS

IKEM is investigating the need for legal adjustments to integrate ERS into existing traffic and energy systems on German highways.

Electric road systems (ERS) are infrastructures – e.g. overhead lines or inductive charging technologies – for supplying electric vehicles with energy while driving. These systems have the potential to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transportation, particularly in heavy goods traffic.

On behalf of the federal government’s Autobahn GmbH, IKEM identifies legal adaptation requirements for the further expansion of ERS on German highways. Main focus of the analysis of the national and European legal framework are the prerequisites required to integrate the ERS infrastructure into the existing road-side and energy systems.

IKEM and EUETH will be hosting a series of side events at this year’s climate negotiations to discuss the energy-climate-defense nexus, the reconstruction of Ukraine’s energy system, and nature-based solutions for climate mitigation.
