Deputy Scientific Director, Department Head

Dr Michael Kalis is Deputy Scientific Director at IKEM and heads the institute’s Research Academy department. He is also a senior researcher in the “Energy” cluster at the Interdisciplinary Research Centre for the Baltic Sea Region (IFZO) at the University of Greifswald.

He studied law with a focus on international and European law at the European University Viadrina and the Université du Luxembourg. In his dissertation, submitted to the University of Greifswald, he examined issues of justiciable climate protection in Germany and national climate lawsuits.

At IKEM, Dr Kalis addresses fundamental questions of climate and energy transition law. His research interests range from issues of climate justice and planetary justice, the role of law in the Anthropocene and the meaning of climate protection in the constitution to questions of sector coupling, the use of synthetic fuels and the role of hydrogen in the energy transition. In his projects at IKEM and IFZO, he is currently investigating the legal and legal policy framework for hydrogen as part of the national and European energy transition.
