Prof. Dr.-Ing. Karsten Lemmer has been a member of the Executive Board of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) since 2021, responsible for “Innovation, Transfer and Scientific Infrastructures”. He focuses on tapping innovations from research, transferring know-how and technologies to industry, and operating research infrastructures in order to strengthen industry with DLR research.

Karsten Lemmer studied electrical engineering and worked as a research assistant and academic councilor at the Technical University of Braunschweig, where he also received his doctorate in 1994. In 1997, he joined Siemens AG as Head of European Projects and later Director New Business Development. In 2001, following a joint appointment with the Technical University of Braunschweig, he joined DLR as founding director of the Institute of Transportation Systems Engineering, which today has a research staff of around 200. From 2017 to 2021, Karsten Lemmer assumed the role of DLR’s Executive Board Member for Energy and Transport.

In addition to his membership on the advisory board of IKEM, Karsten Lemmer is a member of the Hydrogen Council, which was founded in 2020 and was set up by the German government to advise on the implementation of the National Hydrogen Strategy. He is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the National Organization Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology (NOW) and a full appointed member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech). He represents the Federal Republic of Germany in the European Rail Research Advisory Council (ERRAC) as a National Representative and is Chairman of the Advisory Board at the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), which was established in 2018.
