IKEM Annual Conferences

IKEM has been bringing together experts on current research topics relating to climate protection at its annual conferences since 2014.

The IKEM annual conferences bring together experts from various fields to discuss current topics and issues in the areas of climate protection, energy and sustainable mobility. The aim of the event is to promote the exchange between science, practice and politics, to present current research results and to develop new strategies for overcoming the challenges of climate change.

Transnational Energy Cooperation in the Baltic Sea Region

In the fight against climate change and in view of international conflicts, offshore wind power and green hydrogen are becoming increasingly important for the Baltic Sea region. The aim of this two-part event was to highlight the potential of these technologies for the energy transition and the role of transnational cooperation. In the morning, the BOWE2H project presented its results and recommendations. The IKEM annual conference then addressed the question of how offshore wind energy and hydrogen projects can be implemented and promoted in the Baltic Sea region.

Climate roadworks: How can we decarbonise road freight transport?

The continued growth of their share of transport performance makes road commercial vehicles a backbone of our economic system on the one hand and one of the biggest emitters of greenhouse gases in transport on the other. Undoubtedly, there’s an urgent need for action: Since there has hardly been any reduction in emissions until now, the sector must take major steps towards decarbonisation in the next few years – this is the only way to ensure compliance with current climate protection targets.

At the event, experts from various disciplines presented their climate protection strategies for road freight transport. The presentations and subsequent discussions highlighted the challenges currently facing the industry and the urgent need for clear guidance and support from policymakers.

Road to COP27: Making climate protection a global reality

In view of the upcoming COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, the IKEM Annual Conference 2022 was dedicated to the global dimensions of climate protection law and policy. Presentations by renowned researchers and discussions with representatives from politics and practice highlighted the importance of the upcoming climate negotiations for global climate action.

The event began in the morning as a legal conference on the international climate framework and the management of climate-related legal disputes. In the afternoon, presentations and discussions focused on international climate policy in times of uncertainty, war and crises.

Climate protection law

Representatives from the fields of economics, law and social sciences spoke at the IKEM Annual Conference 2021 in Greifswald about climate policy and the new understanding of climate protection law. Their contributions made it clear that climate change affects all areas of life and must therefore be tackled holistically. In line with this understanding, the new climate law also includes climate adaptation and climate impacts and urgently requires a systematization of this wealth of legislation.

Climate compensation

A veritable market for climate compensation certificates has now developed. Nevertheless, prejudices against the certificates persist. Critics see the trade in climate protection certificates as a modern-day indulgence trade. Despite ambitious reduction targets set by countries and companies, climate targets cannot be achieved without offsetting.

Around 80 experts from science, politics and business met in Berlin to discuss what offset certificates need to achieve in order to have a significant impact on the climate. In addition to best practices, the participants also discussed possible adjustments to the regulatory framework.

Climate financing in Germany: How do we finance the energy transition and the 2050 climate protection targets?

Climate finance is of crucial importance as it enables the necessary investments in renewable energy, energy efficiency and other climate-friendly technologies that are essential for achieving national and international climate protection targets. The event provided a platform for experts and interested parties to discuss the challenges and opportunities of financing climate protection measures and the energy transition in Germany.

Boosting the energy transition through sector coupling – are we going all-electric?

After long concentrating on the electricity sector, energy transition efforts are now also focusing on the heating and transport sectors. Today, it is undisputed that a successful energy transition must include all sectors. Sector coupling offers the opportunity to, for example For example, power-to-gas can be used to harness renewable electricity that is not in sufficient demand at the time of generation. On the other hand, consistent implementation will massively increase the overall demand for electricity. In light of the upcoming challenges, the event provided an interdisciplinary overview of key research issues relating to sector coupling.
